Slept On Heat: Astronomy Club
In a world oversaturated by viral "funny people", it is increasingly difficult to find genuinely funny, smart, scripted humor. However, once in a while there is a diamond in the rough that is so fresh, edgy, and hilarious that it catches fire and sweeps across America. In my lifetime it's been In Living Color, Chappelle's Show, and Key and Peele. The new show, Astronomy Club, reminds me of a millenial spin on all three of those respective classics.
The first sketch (at the bottom of this page) sees the cast portraying famous African-American inventors, such as Elijah McCoy, George Washington Carver, Garrett Morgan, Madame C.J. Walker, and Lewis Lattimer (If you don't know who these people are, I highly advise you click their names).
George Washington Carver
1:14 "...but them edges though..."
1:21 "gettin' a little salty huh? Like a peanut!" "
1:24 "Sit down, you just jealous...or should I say, peanut butter and jealous..."
3:22 "Even if you allergic to peanuts you love peanut butter!"
1:46 "How can we forget about peanut paint? Oh that's right, because it's a stupid fuckin idea."
2:55 "We try to change the got damn world, and this nigga here playin' with muthafuckin peanuts!"
Check out a playlist featuring all of Astrology Club's Comedy Central sketches as well as a few of my own here. If you like Astrology Club, I have good news and bad news: the bad news is, they are no longer making sketches for Comedy Central. The good news is, they have a 30-minute, six episode series coming to Netflix. I have a feeling this show will be the next big thing.
